I’ve visited this walled city on the Adriatic twice in my life. Both times I was amazed at its resilience. Since the Croatian war of independence from 1991 to 1995 it has continued to thrive. Just before my first visit back in 2007 the area had experienced widespread fires on its hillsides thanks to the scorching rays of the sun. It has even been used as the backdrop for scenes in the ‘Game of Thrones’ TV series. Sitting in a café with my friends enjoying a seafood lunch during my last visit in 2019 will always be one of my fondest memories.
